In perfumery, apple first started showing up in compositions of the 1920s. Caron, Patou, Worth and Molinard all employed apple in some of there most famous compositions - Acaciosa, Adieu Sagesse, Vers le Jour, and Îles d'Or, respectively.

Apple continued to be used in fragrances throughout the middle of the century in scents such as Jean Patou Colony and Jacques Fath's Fath de Fath. But the 1980s saw the note grow in popularity with fragrances like Armani, Vanderbilt and Clandestine all featuring apple notes. Men's fragrance also started employing apple in scents such as Lapidus pour Homme and Phantom for Men.

The 1990s saw an explosion in the popularity of apple and it became a key player in some of the most successful fragrances of the late 20th century: Polo Sport, Boucheron Jaipur, Tommy & Tommy Girl, and ck1 all include apple!

But in 2004, Maurice Roucel used apple to create what would become an incredibly successful fragrance line for Donna Karan perfumes (Lauder) with the launch of DKNY Be Delicious. Thirteen years later the line is still going strong with yearly flanker launches.

This week, Fragrantica's international writers explore their favorite apple scents and we invite you to join the conversation by leaving a comment below
